Many of our member colleges present holiday concerts and services — and there's an art sale too — that are open to the public. They often sell out quickly; click on the links for ticket information.


Augsburg College, Minneapolis

Advent Vespers

These services celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with traditional and contemporary hymns, anthems and carols. The Augsburg College Advent Vespers tradition is one of the largest Lutheran worship and music events in the Twin Cities and sees nearly 10,000 worshippers annually.

The concert will include participation by the Concert Band directed by Adrian Lo, the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir directed by Dennis Marzolf and the Mary Martha Singers directed by Ann Fredrickson. Advance reservations are encouraged as concerts tend to fill and seating is general admission.

Let Every Heart Awake and Sing

The concert features five choral ensembles and a 72-piece symphony orchestra presenting the Christmas story through art and music. Each year, the concert is carried on regional radio stations. Every five years, most recently in 2009, the event is videotaped to air on public and commercial television stations across the country.

The Saturday evening worship service will be livestreamed to audiences across the country and around the world. This year, Christmas in Christ Chapel will take the audience on a journey, joining the global travelers who make the pilgrimage to celebrate Christmas in the town of Bethlehem, and to give voice to our shared hope for shalom, salaam, peace in this world. Approximately 300 students, faculty, and staff bring the program to life each year, sharing music, dance, spoken word, and prayer with the Gustavus community.

Held every year the weekend before Thanksgiving, the MCAD Art Sale is an opportunity to buy one-of-a-kind art created by students and recent graduates at unbeatable prices. Now in its 18th year, the sale is a Minnesota tradition that has generated more than $2,500,000 for emerging artists. All proceeds go directly to the individual artists or to MCAD Art Sale Scholarship funds.

St. Olaf Christmas Festival

Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.

The Dec. 6 concert will be broadcast live by Minnesota Public Radio on most regional classical music stations, including 99.5 KSJN in the Twin Cities. Participating choral ensembles include the St. Olaf Choir, Viking Chorus, Chapel Choir, Cantorei, Manitou Singers and the St. Olaf Orchestra. Each group performs individually and as part of a mass ensemble.

Twin Cities Public Television will record the concert and produce “A St. Thomas Christmas,” a one-hour holiday special that will be distributed to public television stations nationwide.
