Physician assistant programs grow, face bottlenecks

Physician assistants are expected to help with what ails health care in the years ahead. But for Minnesota’s growing number of  programs — all at private colleges — lining up clinical settings can be a challenge.

Minnesota Private College Council member institutions awarded 28% of all bachelor’s degrees in the state in 2011-12. This compares to 33% from MnSCU four-year institutions and 31% from the University of Minnesota. Our percentages are higher for specific areas of study: physical sciences (48%), math and statistics (42%), health  professions (37%) biological sciences (35%) and foreign languages (34%). Financial aid budgets have been increasing more rapidly than the listed tuition prices at Minnesota’s private colleges. Looking at the most recent data available for the last two years, financial aid funding has increased on average 11.5% a year. Meanwhile, posted tuitions increased on average 4.8% a year.
