Ahmad Atif Ahmad, Assistant Professor, Religious Studies, Macalester College

Ahmad grew up in Egypt where he studied Islamic Law at Al Azhar, a mosque with an ancient tradition of scholarship. He specializes in Islamic legal history. His first book in Arabic dealt with reviewing court decisions in Islamic law (Cairo, 1997) and a forthcoming work deals with the interrelationship of theoretical and practical legal reasoning in Islam.

Ahmad contributed to the writing and editing of over 200 entries on Islamic intellectual history and contemporary Muslim thought, which were published in "Da’irat al-Ma‘arif al-Islamiyya" (“Encyclopedia of the Islamic Sciences,” Cairo, 1991-1998). Before coming to Macalester, he was a lecturer in Arabic language at Harvard University.

Rev. Dr. Mark Schuler, Professor of Religion & Theology, Concordia University, St. Paul

Schuler’s expertise lies in the areas of New Testament Theology, Archaeology, Biblical Greek.

Schuler is the co-author of the text Called by the Gospel: An Introduction to the New Testament, part of a four-volume textbook series published in 2007 by Wiph and Stock. Schuler directs the archaeological excavation of the Northeast Church project at the Hippos (Sussita) National Park in Israel and annually leads a team of Concordia students and other volunteers to work at the project.

Jim Beilby, Biblical and Theological Studies, Bethel University

Existence of God and apologetics; Contemporary theological issues/debates

Beilby is a well-published expert on contemporary theological issues and debates. He has participated in numerous public debates on the existence of God. He has authored or co-authored numerous books including: Why Bother With Truth (RZIM); Divine Foreknowledge: Four Views (InterVarsity); Naturalism Defeated? (Cornell University Press); and Christian Apologetics (Eerdmans), as well as numerous articles in journals such as Faith and Philosophy, Religious Studies, and International Journal for Philosophy of Religion.

J. Andrew Overman, Professor, Classics, Macalester College

Overman specializes in religion, culture and ethnicity in the Greco-Roman world. He is an archeologist, working most recently in northern Israel.

He has written widely on the development of Judaism and Christianity in the Roman world, the interaction between cultures and races within the Roman Empire, Diaspora Judaism and the archeology of the Roman world. Overman also directs Macalester's archaeological excavations in Israel, which began in 1999.

Roy Hammerling, Religion, Concordia College

Dr. Hammerling takes his theological knowledge and examines films—some that have very overt religious themes and others that are not as obvious.

Dr. Hammerling earned his bachelor's degree from Pacific Lutheran University and his Master's of Divinity degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary. He earned a master's degree and doctorate from University of Notre Dame.

Jamie Schillinger,
Assistant Professor, Religion, & Director,  Middle East Studies,
St. Olaf College

Schillinger's academic interests include theology and ethics in both the Christian and Islamic traditions, the philosophy of religion, and the relationship between religion and politics.

He studied for one year in Damascus, Syria, and he is fluent in Arabic.
