"Life is like a symphony; write your own, and play it well, and someday it will be celebrated in the halls of the world...and if not, it'll still be a good song for the drive home."
—Maggie Grage, Augsburg senior and UESS participant
The UESS program is designed for students of color who are interested in a teaching career in the St. Paul or Minneapolis Public Schools. The UESS program runs from mid-June through July. Classroom observation and service-learning requires approximately five hours a week for seven weeks. One day each week participants meet in the afternoon for Urban Teaching Seminar Sessions and field experiences.
Students will be awarded a total of $9000 upon successful completion of the program. The program is designed to take the place of summer employment due to the $4000 stipend. A $5000 scholarship will be awarded to each participant provided that he/she will be attending an affiliated Minnesota private college or university in the fall semester following the program.
Scholarship recipients are generally selected on a first come, first serve basis. Each applicant must submit the application form and teacher recommendation to their campus financial aid office OR the Minnesota Private College Fund by the application deadline.
We invite you to read some inspiring scholar stories and view the Summer 2005 Calendar PDF (71 Kb) for an example of program activities.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be:
- Education Majors
- Students of Color
- Current Juniors, Seniors or Post-B.A. students
- Attending private colleges and universities affiliated with the Minnesota Private College Fund
- Able to participate in workshops and classroom service-learning during St. Paul Public Schools’ 2007 Summer School
- Interested in a career in the St. Paul or Minneapolis public and/or charter schools — preference for those who want to teach in St. Paul
