About the Urban Education Summer Scholars Program
The Urban Education Summer Scholars (UESS) Program was developed to increase the number of teachers of color in the St. Paul and Minneapolis urban schools. Scholarships are awarded to students of color who are committed to pursuing a teaching career in a Twin Cities urban school, with a preference for students who want to teach in St. Paul. Scholarship recipients participate in a service learning experience, provided by the St. Paul Public Schools and the Hamline University Center for Excellence in Urban Teaching, which focuses on building urban teaching skills.
"The summer school experience is about making us effective teachers for the urban and urban-like learners in our diverse schools," said Patrick Mushale, teacher in the St. Paul Public School District. "I must say that this program was an eye-opener. We learned so many things that I would be able to write a detailed book."
