Years supporting the Fund: 53
Phillips Scholars create and test innovative ideas that address community problems — running their own summer programming. There’s support along the way, with the students coming together to develop their leadership skills and prepare for their projects. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Ten students from 15 eligible Minnesota private colleges and universities will be selected each year.
The application for the 2024-25 academic year opens on Sept. 1, 2023. The deadline to apply is Feb. 23, 2024. There’s more information in the handout that is posted below.

About the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Minnesota
Since 2016, the Jay & Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Minnesota invests in the creative and strategic genius of the North Minneapolis community in the spaces of economic development and education. North Minneapolis is a community with a rich set of histories, a wealth of knowledge, a deep commitment to the health of its community, and an eagerness to build suitable and positive change. The Phillips Scholars Program perpetuates the legacy of service to others reflected in the lives of Jay and Rose Phillips. Since the program began, 147 Phillips Scholars have been selected.
Jay Phillips was a peddler's son who came to the United States when he was 2½ years old. As a child he made 50 cents to one dollar a day selling 1¢ papers. He would use part of his earnings to buy bread for the poor he saw on the streets. Jay Phillips went on to become a prominent Minnesota businessman and community leader. Jay and his wife Rose began a tradition of philanthropy that his family and The Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Minnesota continue.
