PHILLIPS SCHOLAR TIME COMMITMENT

Please Note: The Phillips Scholars Program will take approximately 5-10 hours of planning per week during 2022-23 academic year. In addition, Phillips Scholars are required to attend five, two-hour trainings throughout the year and a two-day retreat. Please be aware of the time commitment this program requires when applying. We understand students have many other commitments (i.e., family obligations, sports/extracurriculars, clubs/organizations, volunteering, work). Please be sure you have the capacity to fulfill this commitment when applying.

The Phillips Scholars program is a leadership development program providing students the opportunity to create, collaborate on, and complete a summer project focusing on a specific community issue. This program invests in future leaders by providing the space and opportunity to develop key skills in real world circumstances.

The following questions are designed to give us a sense of who you are and how you see the world. Please feel free to extend beyond these questions when answering. Please limit your answers to 1500 words.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR IDEA AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU

This scholarship is centered around the creation and execution of a project that meets an unmet need in the community. We believe students have innovative ideas and solutions to issues our communities face. Tell us about the idea you have and what you hope to accomplish. Use this space to expand on the idea, why it is important to you and how it affects your community. Please include organizations you would like to work with, goals you hope to achieve, and the populations you hope to interact with while executing your project. Please note, it is a program requirement that you work with a community partner in Minnesota when executing a project and the project must be completed during the summer of 2023 – allowing you one year to plan and execute your idea. Please limit your answer to 1500 words.

The goal of the Phillips Scholars program is to invest in and cultivate the future leaders in our community. Tell us about a leader you admire. Please describe the attributes of leadership, integrity, drive, and social conscious this person exhibits. What do you admire about this person and why? ADVERSITY

The Phillips Scholarship provides students the opportunity to experience real work in real time. In every case, students must pivot in their planning and adjust their projects.
