Upon graduating from high school, St. Paul native Hannah Hausman did not plan on attending college so close to home.

“I weighed all of my decisions and found that St. Kate’s was the most affordable option compared to public and private universities I applied to out of state,” they said.

Hausman, having previous experience with St. Catherine University as a Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) student while in high school, credits the strong financial aid and welcoming community to their decision.

“I knew I liked St. Kate’s because of my time as a PSEO student, so that, coupled with the financial aid, made it an extremely affordable option for me,” they said. “I am so grateful for the variety of scholarships I receive, especially the merit-based scholarships that are allowing me to grow and launch my career.”

In addition to merit-based scholarships, Hausman works as a tutor on campus, assisting peers with math and science coursework. In the spring of 2023, Hausman was named a 2023 Goldwater Scholar, the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering in America.

They also work on campus in the biology department working on microbiology lab prep, a field they hope to enter upon graduation.

“My financial aid has allowed me to focus on my passion and attend graduate school right after graduation,” they said. Hausman recently applied to graduate schools outside of Minnesota to pursue a PhD in molecular biology, specializing in biomedical regenerative sciences with a focus on the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases.

Outside of working and attending classes, Hausman also is involved in the St. Kate’s biology club and the queer student association.

Accessibility and community also influenced the third-year student’s decision to attend St. Kate’s. “I enjoy how classes are focused on discussions and that there are many seminar-based opportunities, it pushes me as a student,” Hausman said. “I am glad I considered all of my options for undergrad, and that the financial aid I have been given at St. Kate’s has allowed me to access so many opportunities in a personalized environment” they said.
