Photo gallery: Engaging with pre-K through 12th graders

One of the things that our colleges do best is engaging students with whatever they’re studying, but it goes beyond just learning in the classroom. It’s not uncommon for students at our colleges to engage with pre-K through 12th grade students as well, helping them learn and grow. We asked our colleges for photos of their students working with children — on and off campus, in their local communities and globally.
Bethel University journalism students partnered with fourth- and fifth-graders at Maxfield Elementary in St. Paul Public Schools to create a school newspaper. A College of Saint Benedict student spends time with students at a primary school in South Africa. The College of St. Scholastica baseball team volunteering with children at Pike Lake Elementary School during the college’s annual Community Day volunteer event. Gustavus Adolphus College students from the Piano Laboratory School provide music lessons and tutoring to children from the Saint Peter area. The Hamline University and Hamline Elementary collaboration fosters reciprocal relationships and practices the philosophy that “College Begins in Kindergarten.” Through the McVay Youth Partnership, Hamline University students spend time with middle and high school students to create art, music, drama, and receive help with their homework. A Saint John’s University student has fun with students during a semester study abroad experience in China. Saint Mary's University of Minnesota School of Education students are in classrooms every semester starting with the sophomore year. Community, relationships, and "seeing the child in front of you" are the Saint Mary's focus. The i.t.a. Literacy Clinic at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota provides one-on-one reading, spelling and writing intervention for Winona-area K-12 students who are struggling in literacy development.
