The “liberal” in liberal arts is not a reference to political leaning, but comes from liberalis meaning "free," as in the education deemed worthy for free men. The liberal arts encompass disciplines not just in the humanities and social sciences but science as well.

A liberal arts education is an approach that fosters critical thinking, analysis and synthesis of information and ideas and encourages independent and creative thinking. It also provides both an in-depth study in a specific discipline as well as broad knowledge of other disciplines to install a greater understanding of the world. This last point instills an understanding in how cultural and ethnic backgrounds shape perspectives — an invaluable asset in today’s every more diverse and global workforce.
