Financial aid 101
This spring more than 88,000 Minnesota college students are receiving a State Grant award. That's about one out of four college students in the state, with recipients attending all kinds of institutions — two-year and four-year, public and private.
With awards averaging $2,696, these grants are a critical piece of students' financial aid packages, allowing them to afford college and limit the amount of money they have to borrow. The grants are awarded based on need; most recipients have incomes below $50,000.
"If I had not received the State Grant I probably would have had to take out more student loans, which is never easy or fun," said Leslie Karpen, a health information management major at The College of St. Scholastica, Duluth. "I already work three jobs to help pay for college and without this assistance I would probably not be able to attend a school that is one of the best in the country for my major."
